Since they were 6 months old both dogs have hunted nearly every day together with the bird of prey.
They have made themselves indispensable as pointing dogs due to:
- their passion which can hardly be beaten
- their marvellous nose and their will to find the prey
- their pointing characteristics which are similiar to a petrifaction
- the way they enjoy water work
- their brief but persistent tracking and the close contact to the dog's guide
- the fact that they are easily commandable and obedient
These are only some of the characteristics which make hawking for us an experience where tension and relax are very closely togehter and which make us feel that bird of prey, dogs and guide are a team in which everybody knows the work he has to do.
But also the work "after the shot" represents no problem for the longhair weimaraner and it depends considerably from the guide's capacity how brilliant this dog-breed carries out the taks searching-finding-bringing.
When he has intensive contact with his guide for the longhair weimaraner it is a challenge to show what he is able to do. Hardness is one of the most inconvenient means and leads to complete refusal. Praise and reward let him bloosom. A firm attitude of the guide facilitates the orientation for the weimaraner.
